What is Halloween?
Halloween is on October 31st every year.
But, what is Halloween and where is it from? Let’s learn about Halloween.
Where do you think Halloween is from?
America, Australia,Canada, Africa. No, it is from Ireland.
Halloween is an Irish festival from long, long ago.
In the 1840’s many Irish people went to America.
These Irish people brought Halloween to America with them.
What is Halloween?
Halloween is a little like Obon in Japan.
In Ireland a long, long time ago people believed that the spirits of dead people came back to earth on October 31st.
But these dead spirits didn’t have a body.
They wanted a body to live in, so they searched for bodies that they could live in.
Irish people didn’t want dead spirits taking their body so they wore scary costumes to make the dead spirits go away.
So nowadays, people still dress up in costumes at Halloween.
Trick or Treating
Trick or treating is very popular for young children.
About 90% of young children in Ireland go trick or treating on October 31st.
Children wear scary costumes.
Children visit many houses in their neighborhood.
Their neighbors give them candy or sometimes money.
But, where is trick or treating from?
Trick or treating started more than 1,000 years ago.
Many poor people had no money and no food. They were very hungry.
They wanted to eat food. They visited many houses and asked for food.
Some people gave them bread with currants.
The poor person promised to pray for the persons dead family members.
