When I was a child I looked forward to December 25th. It is Christmas Day. At Christmas people exchange presents with each other. In my family there are 12 people and I am the youngest, so I always got many, many presents.
My father always bought our Christmas tree and we put the Christmas tree in our living room on December 18th – one week before Christmas Day. When we put up our Christmas tree my family put my presents under the tree. My brothers and sisters gave me many presents. My presents were always wrapped in wrapping paper. So, I couldn’t see what was inside. And, I couldn’t open my presents until Christmas Day. I had to wait one week to open my presents. I was so excited.
My mother was always busy preparing for Christmas dinner. She had to buy a lot of food for my family.
We always ate turkey and ham on Christmas Day. My mother also made many cakes and desserts. She had a very hard job. I always remember the smell of her cooking in the kitchen and her smiling face. I liked helping my mother.
On Christmas Eve night, Santa Claus visited our house. My sisters, brothers and I would prepare food and drink for Santa Claus and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. At about 9 o’clock in the evening we went to bed. But, we couldn’t sleep. We were too excited about Santa Claus. We stayed awake until about 2am. We looked out of our window at the sky. The sky was very dark and we searched for Santa Claus among the stars. My sisters and brothers could never see him, but I always saw him flying across the cold sky.
On Christmas Day we got up at 6 in the morning. I always woke first, then, I called my brothers and sisters. When they woke up, we went to my mother and fathers bedroom. We called my mother and father but they never got up. They were too sleepy and it was very early. After we called my mother and father we went downstairs. The house was very dark and cold on Christmas morning. But my brothers, sisters and I didn’t mind. We were so excited to see what Santa Claus brought us. We ran downstairs and into the kitchen, then, we stopped at the living room door. We were afraid to go in to the living room.
Maybe Santa Claus was still in there. But then we were just too excited and pushed open the door. Santa Claus was not there, but our presents were. We ran to open our presents and spent the rest of the day playing with them.
My favourite presents were the colouring books and crayons that Santa Claus gave to me. I loved to colour and paint all day on Christmas Day.
At 11:00 o’clock my family would go to church. We would pray at church and listen to the church choir sing beautiful Christmas songs. It was wonderful.
There is nothing open on Christmas Day in Ireland. So, after church we came home and played with our toys again. Then at 3 o’clock in the afternoon we had our big Christmas dinner. After Christmas dinner we watched many movies and pop shows on TV. Many of our cousins came to visit our house on Christmas Day. On Christmas night my brothers started singing songs and we all sang together.
