人権週間に思い出に残っている英語の授業がありました。
高校生の時、いきなり、紙一枚の英文が配られ、明日までに訳しておいでとのこと、今ならwebで和訳が写せるのですが、１９７０年代ですので、何時間もかけて訳した記憶があります。
　下の文章は１９６３年夏、アメリカの人種差別がまだまだひどい時代に、人種差別をなくしてほしいと群衆がデモをし、人種差別のひどさに暴徒化する寸前だったとき、群衆にキング牧師が訴えた世界で最も有名なスピーチの一つです。
　I have a dream〜で始まるスピーチは、日本の詩で言う「韻」にあたる「ライム」というリズムが効き、文章だけでなく表現としても素晴らしいと教えられました。和訳もつけましたのでぜひ読んでみてください。

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream.
　　絶望の谷底でもがき進むのはやめましょう。私は今日、私の友人である皆さんに話しています。そして今日、更に明日、私たちが困難に直面するとしても、それでもなお私には夢があります。

It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
　　その夢はアメリカンドリームに深く根ざしたものです。

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.
　　私には夢があります。いつの日か、この国が立ち上がりその建国の信条の本当の意味−つまり「我々は、すべての人間は平等なものとして創造されたということを自明の真理として確認する」（合衆国独立宣言の一節）−と共に存続するようになるという夢です。

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
　私には夢があります。いつの日か、ジョージアの赤茶けた丘の上で、昔は奴隷だった人々の子孫と、昔は奴隷の所有者だった人々の子孫が、同胞のテーブルに一緒に座ることができるようになるという夢です。

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
　　私には夢があります。いつの日か、ミシシッピーのような不正義と抑圧の熱気でうだるような州が、自由と正義のオアシスへと変貌するという夢です。
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
　私には夢があります。いつの日か、私の4人の可愛い子供たちが、肌の色ではなく彼らの人柄の中身で評価される国に住むようになることです。

I have a dream today!
　今日、私には夢があるのです。
